Canada is a very connected nation. In fact, Canadians are the heaviest Internet users in the world, spending an average of 45.6 hours per month online, according to a report from the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA). They also use social media, and, according to Statistics Canada, just over two-thirds (67%) of those Canadians who used the Internet visited social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter in 2012.
This presents a great opportunity for those trying to reach Canadians with important information. Social media not only has the power to quickly get information to those who need it, but it can also be used to mobilize others to spread the message for you.
It's why we're currently challenging public health care organizations to go viral. Through our Public Health Social Media Challenge, we hope to encourage public health organizations to use social media to engage with Canadians, arm them with important information and tips, and to encourage them to share those messages with others.
