There are many factors to be concerned about when it comes to the safe use of prescription medications. For example, 39 per cent of Canadians aged 55+ take four or more medications. And Canada is now the second largest consumer of prescription opioids in the world, according to the Canadian Center for Addiction. So given the current landscape, what are some of the steps we can take for the safer use of prescription medication? One important step is e-prescribing — the secure electronic transmission of a prescription from a prescriber to a patient’s pharmacy.
e-Prescribing can help reduce fraud and facilitate better communication between prescribers and pharmacists. The video below nicely sums up some of the key benefits of e-prescribing. Take a look and let me know your thoughts on whether you think it’s time for e-prescribing in Canada.
