Artificial Intelligence
Building Smart Machines
Artificial intelligence (AI), a wide-ranging branch of computer science concerned with building smart machines and software that can mimic human intelligence, has become a ubiquitous presence in many aspects of our lives in Canada, including health care.
Some applications of AI in health care include:
- Diagnosis and quality control
- Intelligent symptom checkers
- Robot-assisted surgery
- Automating repetitive processes
- Patient monitoring and alerting
- Biopharmaceutical development
As a country, Canada has established a strong global reputation in AI with CIFAR’s (formerly the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research) Pan-Canadian AI Strategy, which began in 2017. It’s the world’s first national AI strategy. Canada has invested greatly in research and development and we must translate this work into tangible impacts on health outcomes.
AI Toolkit for Implementers
Health care organizations have unique requirements when it comes to AI. This toolkit provides an overview of the issues related to the implementation and uses of AI solutions in health care and provides strategic and operational guidance for designing responsible AI projects and AI governance programs.
