Canada Health Infoway Recognized for Commitment to Accountability

(Ottawa) – Canada Health Infoway (Infoway) today received a Canadian Government  Executive Leadership Award in recognition of its continued commitment to accountability for investments and excellence in project management.

The award was presented by Canadian Government Executive (CGE), a Canadian journal for public sector executives at its 2014 Leadership Summit.

“We focused on leaders who are providing improved service at lower cost,” says Dr. Paul Crookall, editor emeritus of Canadian Government Executive Magazine and chair of the Awards Selection Committee. “Canada Health Infoway excels at what publicly-funded organizations need to do – be open and transparent with how they use taxpayer dollars, provide collaboration and linkages among stakeholders and demonstrate that efficiency.”

From 2007 to 2012, an estimated $8.6 billion in benefits accrued to Canadians and the health care system as a result of Infoway investments in electronic medical records, telehealth, drug information systems and diagnostic imaging solutions alone.

“Infoway uses a phased and gated funding model, which allows for the release of funding only when pre-set milestones are met,” says Richard Alvarez, President and CEO, Canada Health Infoway. “Together with the provinces and territories, the digital health projects we have invested in have led to significant benefits for the health system.”

This is the second recent award that recognizes Infoway. In November 2013, the Project Management Institute, the world’s largest not-for-profit membership association for the project management profession, awarded Infoway the prestigious, global Project Management Office of the year award.

“We find that the best organizations have good leaders who use the right tools,” added Dr. Crookall. "In Infoway's case, that was use of project management and information systems that tracked the impact on clients and savings achieved."
