2022 Canadian Interoperability Landscape: A Survey of Clinicians

A patient’s care journey may include check ins with a family doctor, visits with specialists, trips to the emergency department, and more.

To better coordinate care and avoid delays and duplications, everyone on a patient’s care team needs better access to a patient’s complete health care history. Infoway surveyed more than 800 Canadian clinicians about their ability to access information from other care settings to better understand the benefits, gaps and opportunities for connected care.

Accessing Patient Data

91 per cent of Canadian clinicians report using electronic records at their main practice setting and 70 per cent report being able to access important patient information.

However, the No. 1 barrier to improving connected care is lack of universal adoption of exchange standards, according to Canadian clinicians.

The Opportunity

Clinicians recognize the potential benefits of improved interoperability within the health care system. Connected care, or interoperability, enables information to flow seamlessly between different solutions and devices. When different parts of the health system are interoperable with each other, they can speak the same language.
