Artificial Intelligence
Building Smart Machines
Artificial intelligence (AI), a wide-ranging branch of computer science concerned with building smart machines and software that can mimic human intelligence, has become a ubiquitous presence in many aspects of our lives in Canada, including healthcare.
As a country, Canada has established a strong global reputation in AI with CIFAR’s (formerly the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research) Pan-Canadian AI Strategy, which began in 2017. It’s the world’s first national AI strategy. Canada has invested greatly in research and development, and we must translate this work into tangible impacts on health outcomes.
Accelerating AI Adoption
Infoway is committed to accelerating the use of AI in healthcare. We work with technology, research, industry and public sector partners to prime the Canadian landscape for the adoption of AI-enabled technologies, such as AI scribes, AI-powered scheduling tools, AI analytics for workforce planning AI-based clinical decision support systems, and more.
These tools can help reduce physician burnout and improve the patient experience by:
- allowing providers to focus more on engagement and less on documentation
- increasing the chances of same-day or next-day appointment availability
- forecasting workforce trends, allowing health care organizations to anticipate staffing
- reducing time spent on complex decisions, enhancing patient flow and access
Toolkits and Resources
Infoway has developed two toolkits to assist healthcare organizations across Canada understand what is required to embark on an AI implementation journey and how to navigate the complexities of AI procurement while ensuring compliance with regulations, ethical practices, and patient safety.
